Alumni, Family and Friends
I couldn’t be more honored to write a note about volunteerism and service in the month of November. As a Navy veteran, I appreciate service and volunteering on a deeply personal level. I’m grateful for that sense of being a part of something greater which has carried throughout my life. As a sailor, volunteer firefighter and now as an alumnus, volunteering has always meant giving something of myself for the benefit of others. And here’s the secret to volunteering at SNHU: Unlike being a sailor or firefighter … it’s easy.I began volunteering with mock interviews. I gave a couple hours each time the opportunity was announced and sat in a 40-minute interview through the internet with a student working on their undergraduate degree. After meeting a student from France and a student from Illinois in my first adventure, I was hooked. The career team gave a list of questions to ask and facilitated the whole thing. Quick and easy, but the students and I left with a real appreciation for each other, and I hope they’ve gone on to great things. That experience led me to explore the Active Citizen Network (ACN) and even become elected to the SNHU Alumni Board of Directors. The first project I completed for ACN was designing lunch bags for a school lunch program in Houston, Texas. The team at SNHU sent the bags and crayons, along with an addressed, stamped envelope for the final products. My 16-year-old daughter and I laughed, bonded and happily created smiley faces and empowering messages on lunch bags that we knew would brighten some recipient’s day.My experience with the alumni board has been amazing. It’s an incredibly diverse group of people all dedicated to helping and promoting alumni from all over the world. I’ve learned so much about the history and future of SNHU, and spent time learning about programs such as the Global Education Movement (GEM) initiative that make me unbelievably proud of my alma mater.Volunteer to help at SNHU and SNHU events. It’s easy. It’s fun. I guarantee you’ll be with a great group of people and the good vibes are palpable.Happy November, and thank you for your service, Michael Ramella ’20 ‘21G SNHU Alumni Board of Directors | SNHU Volunteer
