SNHUcan Mentor Resources

Thank you for signing up to be a SNHUcan Mentor! By registering and completing your mentor profile, SNHU community members who are looking for advice or to build their network will be able to view your profile and send you a request to connect.

STEP 1 – Receiving a Connection Request

Individuals who are looking to connect with a mentor have the ability to search the SNHUcan Mentor Directory. When you are selected as a connection, you will receive an email asking you to connect. We encourage the person asking for assistance to include information on who they are and a brief note giving additional details about the purpose for the connection.

The email request will come directly from the individual requesting assistance. You can make the decision on whether this is a person you would like to have a conversation with or if you prefer to decline the request (timing, area of expertise, etc.)

We ask that you try to respond to connection requests either way within 2 business days, but understand that it is not always possible to do so.

STEP 2 – Moving the Conversation Forward

Once you have decided to accept a person as mentee, you can simply reply to the email you have received. This exchange will provide the mentee with your email address along with other contact details you chose to provide.

We have encouraged mentees to prepare for their interaction with you by learning as much about you and your field as they can prior to any conversation. If you have included a link to your LinkedIn profile on your SNHUcan Mentor profile, they should be looking at that, as well.

Your mentee should also have created a list of questions to ask to get the conversation started. A few examples that we have shared with them are below:

Career

  • How did you get into this work?
  • What skills are most important for your kind of work?
  • What do you enjoy most and what rewards do you get from your work?
  • What are the frustrations?
  • What kind of experience would employers in this field look for in a job applicant?
  • How can I obtain such experience?  Would you recommend any extracurricular activities?

Graduate School

  • How would you describe what is involved in pursuing this degree?
  • How did you become interested in this area of study, and what keeps you interested?
  • Would you recommend graduate school right after college, or after gaining some professional experience?

STEP 3 – Ending the Connection

The time commitment needed for each connection will vary based on the purpose, as well as how the relationship develops. Once you and your mentee determine that the connection has run its course, you can simply decide to stop communicating.

We will periodically send out a connection summary survey to get a sense of how connections are going or went. This feedback will allow up to continually improve the experience for both mentees and mentors.

We have set a limit of 5 mentee contacts per month within the SNHUcan platform. If you have been contacted by 5 mentees within a month, the system will automatically prohibit other mentees from reaching out until the next month. If this is an issue for some reason, please contact alumni@snhu.edu for assistance.

*SNHU Career Advisory Network (SNHUcan) is in beta testing mode. Please contact us at alumni@snhu.edu or 603.645.9799 should you encounter any bugs, glitches, lack of functionality or other problems on the website.
