What Went Down: On April 23, 2016, over 500 people from the local Nassau community came together and participated in an Earth Day Fair and mangrove planting at Bonefish Pond. Volunteers assisted with this Earth Day project by planting mangroves to help restore a degraded area of a wetland within a National Park. Students aged 13-17 from local schools were in attendance, planting the mangroves and talking about the importance of these trees to The Bahamas. Other activities included snorkeling, kayaking, lunch and educational booths displaying the work of local organizations. This event was significant because many in the local community are unaware of the environmental issues in the Bahamas and the importance of preserving natural resources.
Bonefish Pond, established in 2002, is 1280 acres of coastal wetland area. This park is an important marine nursery area. It provides protection from storm surges to the communities on the southern coast of New Providence. In addition to the wide array of juvenile fish, crawfish, and conch, this wetland serves as a haven for waterfowl and a variety of Bahamian Flora. This makes it a perfect place for a hands-on learning experience.
