Learn more: The mission of the Prison Book Program (PBP) is to support people in prison by sending them free books and print resources that meet their specific needs and interests. The PBP provides highly engaging volunteer experiences that connect people inside and outside of the American prison system. Last year, the PBP mailed 53,308 books to 15,231 people thanks to 1,103 volunteers who served 8,320 hours.
PBP believes that everyone has a right to read, and that books are tremendous sources of enlightenment, enjoyment, and transformation. They also strive to lessen the dehumanization and isolation of incarceration by providing our readers with a connection to a community of caring people. Over their 50 years, PBP has made special efforts to create and distribute information and resources that can be helpful to incarcerated people and their loved ones.
Consider hosting a book drive to make a big impact. Check out their website for all of the ways to donate books. Please ensure your books meet PBP guidelines.
PBP is based in Boston and serves most US states. If you're interested in supporting something more local to you, check out this comprehensive list of "Books to Prisoners" groups located throughout the US, Canada and England.
