Ed Ithier '87 '93G

"We all lead busy lives, but I truly encourage alumni to get involved in some way.  As an alum, I’m proud of the direction of the school. The future is very bright for our students and the institution.  I think it will be even better as more and more alumni get involved. I’m proud to be a SNHU graduate and to be part of the growth of the institution."

SNHU Alumni Ed Ithier Class of 1987 & 1993Get to Know Our November 2015 Honoree

Ed Ithier '87 '93G is a face seen around SNHU's Manchester campus quite often, speaking in classes, reviewing resumes, helping with the Professional Selling Association and cheering on Pemen athletes. Ed received the Alumni Hall of Fame award in 1998, and Athletic Hall of Fame award in 2014.

What inspires you to volunteer at SNHU?

SNHU has always been a big part of my life.  I was blessed to have so many people from the college support me during my years at NHC.  They helped shape me as a student and person.  I always knew that once I graduated, I wanted to give back in some way.

It  is also so rewarding being part of a student’s  development and success.

What do you enjoy most about volunteering at SNHU?

For me working with students and faculty has been a great experience.  I’ve learned a lot from the faculty members who I’ve had the pleasure to work with, as well as the students. Working with the students keeps me young and up to date.

I’m just happy to be able to be in a position to help students and be a part of all the great things that are happening at SNHU.

What results have you seen from your efforts?

I like to think not just my efforts, but the combined efforts of a lot of people have helped to make the students’ experiences the best possible. I’ve been involved with NHC/SNHU in some capacity since 1990.

The past several years, I’ve worked closely with Professor Micheline Anstey on developing a Professional Sales curriculum for students interested in a career in sales. As a result, this year SNHU implemented a Sales Minor Concentration. We have seen student participation and interest in the program increase tremendously.

Also, during the last few years we put together sales competition teams that have done extremely well at both regional and national sales competitions.  In a short time, and with the support of administration, alumni, faculty, and our students, SNHU has established itself as one of the best educational institutions for sales education.

Did anything unexpected happen as a result of your volunteer activities?

Yes, working with faculty and students over the years has given me the passion to teach once I leave the business world.  I never thought about teaching until I began working with faculty members and students. It has been extremely rewarding and inspiring for me.  I’ve learned a lot about what goes on behind the scenes to prepare for courses and what it takes to be an effective educator.  Working with SNHU faculty members has given me even more insight and admiration for educators.

Will you continue to volunteer at SNHU? Why?

I will always find a way to volunteer and be part of the SNHU community because I think it is important to give back.  As I said previously, I was fortunate to have people help me when I was a student. I want to be able to do the same.  Volunteering has been rewarding and educational.  It has also given me the opportunity to stay connected to the school.

Will you encourage others to get involved? How?

I will always encourage alumni, and especially students that I have the opportunity to interact with, to stay involved with the school and help students.  Besides financial support from alumni, I think for any educational institution to be successful, there is also a need for strong alumni involvement with students.   I believe alumni sharing their experiences and working with students provides an environment that encourages students to get involved once they graduate.

For example, since my involvement with the Sales Minor Program, we’ve seen graduates come back and help coach students for sales competitions, mentor students in the program, and be guest speakers for sales classes where they share their work experiences.  Little things like these have helped keep graduates involved, connect alumni with students and faculty, and further strengthen the Sales Program.
