Heidi graduated in 2013 with a Bachelor's degree in Communications with a minor in Marketing. She has been mentoring students through the Signature Leadership Program and working with the Dorothy S. Rogers Career Development Center to hire SNHU students and alumni.
I remember how helpful everyone was while I was in school at SNHU, so when I graduated and found my happy place, I immediately loved being on the other side of the table. My career is to help people find financial success, so I get to live out my passion of helping people daily. Helping students is just another iteration. There are things I wish I had known before graduating—like what to do when your potential employer offers you the job and the salary isn’t what you want or even negotiating time off. Being a recent grad, I think a lot of people just take what they are given, but sometimes you bring more to the table than the person behind you in line for the job.
I love seeing the process and the journey to the finish line. Everyone runs their own races in life, you just don’t always know which race they may be in. Once that race ends, another begins. It is always so fulfilling to watch students overcome obstacles and come out stronger than they were before. With my mentee, she is a tough cookie. She works hard in and out of the class room. Her world is not easy, but she makes it look effortless from the outside looking in. I know that when she graduates, she will be successful in her journey, because of her hard work and perseverance she has practiced.
I have noticed how powerful an outside contact person off campus has been. My mentee has been able to share with me her career goals and I have been able to tap into my personal and professional network to help her achieve the internship and/or the job she is hoping for.
I wouldn’t say anything unexpected happened, but I did notice the headway we were making professionally with my mentee’s career search. Not only has she attended the career fairs on campus, but she has printed her own business cards and has a top notch resume to get her one step closer to the interview.
I will always continue to volunteer at SNHU in some capacity, because I know that the university did everything they could for me and there were always people cheering me on. It’s my turn to help someone reach their finish line.
Yes. I think the more awareness of opportunities to get involved, the better. Sharing my experiences with my colleagues and peers has been great. Many did not realize the impact that graduates can have even a few years out of college.
A very special thank you to JoAnna Luiso and Sara Telfer for putting together this amazing group of students with leadership characteristics that I am so fortunate to work with. Additionally, thank you to Andrea Bard, Bill Jenkins, Jon Boroshok, Lori Deconink, Michele Goldsmith, and Paul LeBlanc for always being part of my support system as an undergrad and as an alumna.
