What Happened: On Sunday, April 28, the SNHU community rallied together for The Out of the Darkness Walk, a journey of rememberance, hope, support, and a walk that unites a campus and community. Walkers could choose different colored honor beads to share their personal connection to the cause and help identify others who understand their experience. This event is a time to acknowledge the ways in which suicide and mental illness have affected our lives and the lives of our loved ones. The Out of Darkness Walks are the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention's (AFSP) signature student fundraising series, designed to engage youth and young adults in the fight to prevent suicide, the second leading cause of death among people ages 15-24.
The SNHU team had a goal of raising $30,000, and completely CRUSHED it, raising a total of $31,136. The funds raised allow AFSP to invest in new research, create educational programs, advocate for public policy, and support survivors of suicide loss. As the leader in the fight against suicide, and thanks to walkers from cities across the country, AFSP has been able to set a goal to reduce the annual suicide rate 20% by 2025.
