Ever notice that a conflict has emerged from a conversation and that neither party has any idea how the conflict began? Miscommunication and misunderstanding can generate a conflict, resulting in an escalating dispute between or among the parties. Recognizing and using constructive, effective listening and speaking skills can help one manage and address conversations and issues, producing understanding and de-escalating interpersonal conflict.

With a doctorate in Conflict Analysis and Resolution, a Master's in Diplomacy, and a Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies focused on Public Sector Communications, and experience with a global student population, Dr. Welden focuses on how miscommunication of intent and impact can lead to misunderstandings that can form, and escalate, conflict. Such conflict can be informed also by cultural differences, expectations of normal and what 'should' be, as well as individual biases. A person's operating paradigm and hidden biases can lead to emotionality and polarization, resulting in an inability to listen constructively to what the other individual(s) in the conflict say and what is meant. Learning effective listening and speaking skills can help to reduce destructive conflict opportunities. Disagreement is fine; the embracement of one's own position, which may become cherished, can lead to destructive conflict. Dr. Welden has been teaching at SNHU since 2012. Prior to that, she taught for a start-up university in Costa Rica. Since 2008, Dr. Welden has been teaching English as a Second Language (ESL), providing an array of students.
