John Wescott '15 shares the impact of food insecurity in Boston, MA, how you can fight hunger by volunteering with the Greater Boston Food Bank, and why SNHU's Global Days of Service is important.
"Reflecting on the Global Days of Service (GDS) initiative, I can’t help but crack a smile. I’ve had the pleasure of organizing a GDS project at the Pine Street Inn in Boston, MA for the last few years. Despite the dark times the pandemic has brought to all of our lives, GDS is an anchor, a moment in time that reminds me of normalcy. It reminds me of my friends from undergrad, working frantically to prepare food for meal service at Boston’s largest homeless services provider. I can hear the executive sous-chef (also an SNHU alum) shouting to her team. I can hear her poking fun at our sub-par vegetable chopping skills while I wipe away tears from laughter and from poorly cutting onions. This is perhaps the one time of year I can guarantee an SNHU reunion, bringing together some of my closest friends from my undergraduate experience. And while I will truly miss it this year, the needs around hunger in America and worldwide have only increased.
Feeding America, a national leader in addressing hunger, recently published findings that one in six Americans are now food insecure. Similarly, Oxfam International has commented that worldwide, we are on the brink of a hunger pandemic the likes we’ve never seen – siting more than 821 million people estimated to be food insecure. The Pine Street Inn has a number of ways to support them through the pandemic and I encourage you to visit their page to learn more. There is no doubt that food shelters and food service providers in your local community are struggling and I’d encourage you to reach out to one to see how you can help! To the SNHU global family, happy 2021 - I wish you all health and happiness in the year ahead."
