Pandemic's Essential Workers Education Session | Thursday, May 6

Hosted by: Beth Anderson ’15, Assistant Director, The Chandler Center, SNHU
Arielys Liriano Trejo, Service Coordinator, The Chandler Center, SNHU

We took a look at the Pandemic’s Essential Workers. Who is considered essential during a pandemic? What were the impacts on essential workers throughout the past year? Who receives resources and support, and who does not? Where is the intersection between essential workers and social issues? This topic is still very new and so is the research around COVID’s impact on people. We discussed our personal experiences to gather more insight around the people who kept working when the world shut down.

Focus on the Pandemic's Essential Workers: SNHU Community Panel | Thursday, May 20

Hosted by: Rebecca Lazinsk ’17G, Assistant Director of Alumni Engagement, SNHU
Chantel Freeman, Senior Assistant Director of Online Engagement, SNHU

We connected and celebrated with several SNHU community members who are essential workers, including a special education teacher in New Orleans and Senior Program Analyst for FEMA. Panelists shared the work they're doing, how COVID-19 has impacted their efforts, and what they want people to know post-pandemic.

Panelists

Fitzpatrick headshotLynn Fitzpatrick '18 has lived in NH all her life and is married to her best friend of 27 years with 3 grown children and 3 dogs. While she was initially involved in cosmetology while she was younger, Lynn graduated SNHU in 2018 with her associate’s degree in Communications and will graduate in June 2021 with a bachelor’s degree in Public Administration. Lynn is currently employed by the City of Manchester Fire Department as an Emergency Dispatcher of EMS and Fire where she works 12-hour shifts 4 days on (2 days and 2 nights) with 4 days off. She averages around 150 calls per day with around 60 emergency calls in any given 12-hour span. Lynn has been dispatching for almost 21 years (13 ½ with Manchester and prior to that with 3 community’s police, fire and ems). Lynn loves to go camping, kayaking, and biking and does 5k’s for great causes! Spending time with her family is Lynn’s key to everything in life and keeps her grounded.

Tager headshot Adam Tager '16G grew up in northern Connecticut and was inspired into service after witnessing the September 11, 2001 attacks and 2005 Hurricane Katrina. After graduating from American University, Adam embarked a career in law enforcement and later entered government consulting, eventually joining the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). During his time at DARPA, Adam began attending Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) part time, earning his Master of Science in Justice Studies in 2016. Since then, Adam has supported FEMA and state emergency management programs from the preparedness, response, and continuous improvement perspectives. He has had roles in all-hazards events, most recently serving in multiple roles during the COVID-19 pandemic response and vaccination efforts. Adam is currently a Disaster Readiness and Continuity Program Analyst with FEMA’s Mission Support Bureau Executive Office. Adam married his wife Allison in 2019 and the two recently moved to New York City. He is active in service and social organizations, a proud Boston sports fan, and new dog-dad to bernedoodle puppy Lox.

Straehle headshotRachael Straehle '17 graduated SNHU with a Bachelors in Arts and Sciences with a Degree in Psychology. She was the Alternative Break Program Coordinator which is where she gained her passion for service. After graduating, she joined City Year New Orleans as a Team Leader. She worked with Grades 5-8 as a science interventionist at Arthur Ashe Charter School. The following year she stayed at Ashe to serve as the  6th grade Special Education Teacher. For the past 2 years she has worked as a First Grade Special Education Teacher at KIPP East Primary. In 2019 Rachael obtained her Masters in Teacher from Relay Graduate School in New Orleans, and was just accepted into a BCBA certification program.
