COVID-19 Update: We are closely monitoring developments regarding the coronavirus. The health, safety, and wellbeing of the SNHU community is of the utmost importance to us. We are not taking registrations for any in-person Global Days of Service projects at this time. Stay tuned for updates as they become available.
Event Details: Saturday, April 11, 2020 | 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. | Seacoast Science Center, Odiorne Point State Park (570 Ocean Boulevard, Rye, NH 03870)
Learn More: We're looking for 65 volunteers to spend 1-2 hours collecting trash and record their findings - contributing to a long-term study on marine pollution. The trash collected will be weighed at the end of the day to see the group's collective impact; this is a great way for kids to learn, too. Blue Ocean Society for Marine Conservation will give a short presentation on their research efforts and ways you can help protect the marine environment.
Why do we do clean-ups? Litter on the beach, such as cigarettes, food wrappers, straws, and bottle caps can affect marine life, who accidentally swallow this debris or feed it to their young. Fishing line and rope, found in high numbers at cleanups each year, can entangle marine life and also harm humans.
All supplies are provided, including bags, non-latex gloves, and data cards. Volunteers are encouraged to bring a travel mug for beverages, wear work gloves to minimize the use of disposable gloves, and wear appropriate and safe footwear, as the beach can be rocky.
This project is family-friendly; all children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Bring a picnic lunch and stick around after if the weather permits.
Parking at Odiorne Point State Park is available.
Clean up is conducted rain or shine. If the weather looks threatening, please call the Blue Ocean Society for Marine Conservation at 603-431-0260. They will leave a message if the cleanup is postponed.
