Young Alumni Summer Newsletter

Meet Guest Blogger De Anna Barber '24

My experience at SNHU started out quiet. I began in May 2019, not knowing if I could handle going back to school at almost 26 years old. I chose SNHU because of their class structure and the ability to attend online. In my mind, I was thinking, “Perfect! Now I don’t need to socialize with anyone.” And I chose to focus my attention on just my classes. Eventually, my hard work got me noticed and I was offered to apply to be on the Online Student Engagement Council (SEC) and little did I know that would help me learn way more than I ever thought I would.

I joined the SEC June 2020 and stayed on until the very end. Because of the SEC, I broke out of my shell; I joined and eventually ran an online club at SNHU (shout out to the Paranormal Research Club!), I participated in Global Days of Service, and I eventually joined as the Online Student Representative of the Alumni Association Board of Directors in April 2023. In all these endeavors, I learned that online learning doesn’t necessarily need to be isolating; SNHU has worked incredibly hard to build a community presence both on campus and online. I have built lasting friendships and with those friendships, I built strong networks to help me land a job I love after graduation. I now possess an associate in accounting and a bachelor’s in accounting and finance, both degrees I hoped I would achieve, but was worried I wouldn’t succeed.

Thanks to my Academic Advisor, all of my teachers that worked with me on difficult assignments, the Office of Student Involvement, the Office of Institutional Advancement, the Alumni Association Board of Directors, and the countless lifelong friends I have made throughout my time with SNHU, I have become a Penmen for life. While I may be an alum now, I am excited to see what my future holds and how I can help touch the lives of those around me, including those who may never be Penmen.

SNHU has shown me ways to be a better leader and that anything is possible with a strong support system and an even stronger passion. Thank you, SNHU, for all you did for me in my time as a student and for shaping me into a better human being. Don’t be afraid to stay involved even after graduation, it’s worth it!

Lasting Impact on First-Generation SNHU Learners

Thanks to the generosity of the SNHU community, we raised more than $215,000 from 278 donors for The President Paul J. LeBlanc First-Generation Scholarship Fund! This scholarship will break down barriers to education, providing financial assistance for students who are the first in their families to pursue an undergraduate degree.

President LeBlanc has been a steadfast advocate for accessibility and inclusivity in higher education and is a first-generation graduate himself. This scholarship will serve as a tribute to his visionary leadership for many years to come. Learn how education transformed the lives of first-generation graduates like Tiare, Tanner, and more.
