Meet Ashley

Ashley MonettaName: Ashley Monetta

Class of: 2018

Program: Bachelor of Science in Marketing, Degree in Three

"The advisors that I’ve had always go the extra mile to make sure that my needs are met."

Why did you choose Southern New Hampshire University?

I chose to attend SNHU for the following reasons:

  • Family: my older brother attended SNHU.
  • Location: the university is close to home. Not only did it allow me to live at home, but I was also able to continue coaching soccer at Spaulding High School while attending college.
  • Opportunity: the university has a very strong brand. Enrolling in the business program would be a great opportunity for networking and meeting new people.

What was your hope in receiving a college education? How has your experience been different than what you’d imagined?

When receiving a college education, my primary objective was to gain more experience and meet new people. I believed college was a great way to further my education and prepare for the workforce. Not only has attending SNHU benefited my career development, but it also has helped my personal development. My experiences in college have helped me grow as a person, learn more about myself, and connect better with others.

The one thing that has surprised me while attending SNHU was the types of opportunities I would have. As previously stated, I knew college was a great place to try and experience new things. However, I could not imagine when and how those new opportunities would come to shape. Having the ability to capitalize on those opportunities when they appeared made my time at SNHU even more impactful.

Many alumni and students talk about the friendly and supportive community at SNHU. Does this resonate with you? In what ways has your SNHU experience felt “personal”?

The relationships with professors. As previously stated, all the professors I have had at SNHU really care about me, and fellow students' development. Knowing this and experiencing it first-hand has always motivated me to work hard and succeed.

What inspired you to choose your area of study?

During my initial college search, I was planning on entering the graphic design field.  However, upon enrolling in SNHU, I noticed the opportunity in the university’s marketing program.  I believed that selecting the marketing program would provide me a diverse skillset to companies in a variety of industries.  It would also compliment my experience in Graphic Design giving me potential for more job opportunities.  It was at this time that I also decided to enter the Degree in 3 Program for its educational and financial benefits as well as real-word experience.

What is your dream job?

Overall, my dream job moving forward would be to work in digital marketing/ analytics for a sports related organization.  I come from a very heavy sports background.  I was a three sport athlete in high school, and now I spend my free time coaching high school girls soccer at Spaulding High School.  I would prefer a career that lets me combine my passion for marketing and sports.

Who at SNHU (teacher, coach, advisor, etc.) has been the biggest influence on your SNHU experience? What lessons did that person teach you?

Inside Marketing Department:

  • Dr. Karen Stone
  • Dr. Pat Spirou

These two professors were great role models and provided expert guidance.  Their passion for the subject material and care for students was always on display and made my college experience very enjoyable.  They taught me the values of hard work, passion, dedication, confidence, and the importance of research.

Outside Marketing Department:

  • Dr. Joseph Corbin III
  • Dr. Frank Catano

These two professors were also great role models for me during my time at SNHU.  Their non-traditional teaching methods made the classroom and overall learning experience enjoyable.  Both professors were very knowledgeable and passionate about their respective subject material.  They taught me to be adventurous, to travel, to not be afraid of new experiences, and be willing to meet new people.

In what ways have you been involved at SNHU (campus organizations, job, sports, etc.)?

  • Being a commuter really limited my time for campus involvement

  • Presented at 2017 Spring Undergraduate Research Day

What do you find most challenging? How do you deal with this?

Some of the challenges I faced included:

  • Being a commuter student – (45 to 55 minutes away)
  • Balance driving time, school, internships, coaching, group projects
  • Maintaining a 3.99 GPA

What are you proudest of?

  • 2018 Outstanding Graduate – School Business Marketing
  • Award from NH State Police – designed new logo for Office of Highway Safety
  • Presented at Undergraduate Research Day - Spring 2017
  • Presented at NEDSI conference in Springfield Mass – Spring 2017

How have alumni impacted you as a student? (classroom speakers, scholarship donations, mentors, internship and career assistance)

The SNHU alumni have been a great resource.  Connecting with them and sharing experiences is just as crucial to development as material learned in the classroom. Hearing it first-hand from a person who has been in your shoes makes the information feel more relatable. The insight the alumni provide is great guidance for future decisions.

What advice would you give to an incoming student?

The advice I would give to incoming students:

  • Embrace change and opportunity
  • Try things outside your major
  • Meet new people
  • Make relationships with your professors, they are here to help you and want the best for you

What are your plans following graduation?

After graduation I plan on:

  • Getting a career in digital marketing/analytics
  • Travel
  • Continue coaching at Spaulding High School

In what ways do you think you will stay involved as an alumnus/a?

I am always happy to come back and help other students and provide experience. For some it is more meaningful to hear advice from a fellow Penmen.
