Scholarships and financial aid have made it possible for me to attend SNHU by lifting a financial burden that could have kept me from pursuing college. As a first-generation student and the child of immigrants, this support means more than just covering tuition it’s an investment in my dreams and my family’s sacrifices. Without it, achieving my degree would be far more difficult.
To those who donate to support student scholarships, I want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart. Your generosity changes lives in ways you may never fully see. You are opening doors for students like me who might otherwise be unable to pursue higher education. As a first-generation college student and the child of immigrants, your support not only eases financial burdens, but also affirms that our dreams are worth investing in. You are helping to shape futures, strengthen communities, and inspire the next generation to give back just as you have.
I chose Southern New Hampshire University because of its strong academic programs, supportive learning environment, and commitment to student success. As a first-generation college student, I wanted a university that would provide not only a high-quality education but also resources, mentorship, and opportunities to grow personally and professionally. SNHU’s focus on career readiness, student engagement, and diversity made it the perfect place for me to pursue my degree in accounting and prepare for a future where I can make a meaningful impact in my community.
My hope in receiving a college education was to create opportunities my family never had and to honor the sacrifices my immigrant parents made. As a first-generation student, I imagined college as simply a place to gain career skills, but it has been so much more. It has challenged me, built my confidence, expanded my perspective, and connected me with people who inspire me to keep striving toward my goals.
I chose accounting because I’ve always been drawn to problem-solving, organization, and understanding how finances shape decisions. As a first-generation student, I grew up seeing how financial knowledge can empower individuals and open doors to stability and opportunity. My dream job is to become a certified public accountant, using my expertise to help businesses grow and to guide individuals in making informed financial choices that can improve their futures.
My biggest influence at SNHU has been my financial accounting professor, Mrs. Micheline West. She has shown me that hard work and dedication truly are the foundations of success. Her support and encouragement have inspired me to persevere through challenges, reminding me that with each step, I am growing and learning. I'm genuinely grateful for her guidance and the compassion she brings to her teaching.
At SNHU, I have been actively involved in several student organizations that have helped me grow both personally and professionally. I am a member of the Accounting Society Club, where I deepen my understanding of the field and connect with peers and mentors who share my passion for accounting. I also participate in the Black Student Union and the Diversity Club, which have allowed me to engage with my community, celebrate different cultures, and advocate for inclusivity on campus. Being part of these groups has strengthened my leadership, teamwork, and communication skills, while enriching my college experience and preparing me to contribute meaningfully in my future career.
One of the most challenging aspects of being a student for me has been balancing the demands of school with personal and family responsibilities. As a first-generation college student and the child of immigrants, I often feel the weight of my family’s hopes on my shoulders, and at times it can be overwhelming to manage course work, campus involvement, and other obligations. I deal with this challenge by staying organized, creating schedules to prioritize tasks, and seeking support from mentors, professors, and peers when I need guidance. I also remind myself of the bigger picture ... that my education is an investment in my future and a way to honor my family’s sacrifices, which helps me stay motivated and focused.
I am proudest of being a first-generation college student who has worked hard to pursue higher education despite challenges. Navigating college without family experience to guide me has required determination, resilience, and focus. I am proud of my ability to stay committed to my goals, maintain my academic performance, and get involved in student organizations, all while honoring the sacrifices my family has made for me. This journey has taught me the value of perseverance and has shown me that I can achieve things I once thought were out of reach.
As a graduate, I hope to stay involved by giving back to SNHU and the community that has supported me throughout my college journey. I plan to mentor current students, especially first-generation and under represented students, sharing guidance and encouragement to help them navigate their academic and career paths. I also hope to participate in alumni events, contribute to professional networks related to accounting, and support initiatives that promote diversity and inclusion on campus. Staying connected will allow me to continue learning, grow professionally, and help open doors for the next generation of students.
