Program: Bachelor of Arts in Creative Writing and English
I love that classes are small, so you can create more of a personal relationship with your peers and the faculty!
My parents are both educators, so this scholarship will really help us out in paying for college. My sister is going to be a freshmen in college this year (2023), so any bit of extra financial support will help my parents put both of us through college.
Your support of scholarships means a lot to students. It's extra rewarding to know my hard work means something and doesn't go unrecognized, even to those who don't know me personally. It's also more motivation to keep pursing the best grades that you possibly can, even when it gets difficult.
I chose Southern New Hampshire University because, as a commuter, it was the perfect distance from my hometown.
Ultimately, my main hope was that I'd enjoy the experience and have fun in an educational setting. I also hoped that I'd gain connections that would lead me to potential career opportunities where I can make use of my talents and passions.
I absolutely love to journal and writing poetry for people that I care deeply about. When I realized this strength of mine, I decided to pursue writing as my area of study. My dream job would allow me to work remotely and travel while writing about things that interest me, such as fashion, music, women's topics and pop culture. I also think being a professor of English would be fun!
Professor William Tyler Paterson has been the most impactful teacher I've had in my entire educational career thus far. Professor Paterson taught his classes in a way where we were encouraged to heighten and explore our ideas, and always have fun doing so. His classes always made me feel safe and I was always eager to attend them. Additionally, he cared about his students on a personal level, through friendship. He would take time out of his day to discuss what was going on in my life, and offer meaningful and valuable advice. He is truly the best educator I've ever had. He introduced me to new passions and assisted me in my creative endeavors for other courses. He is a top quality educator and has changed my life in more ways than one. I'm so grateful for taking the Playwriting Workshop and Writing for Film courses with him. I have fond memories from our live production 'SNHUphoria', as well as developing short films in his classes.
I've been inducted into the Alpha Chi National Honor Society and Sigma Tau Delta International English Honor Society, and have participated in various campus events. I helped to write and put on an original production 'SNHUphoria' at the 2022 Humanities Festival. I wrote, filmed, edited and produced numerous short films for classes. I've acted in my peers' films and participated in the Humanities Film Festival in spring of 2023. I participated in an improv comedy show in December 2022 for my Introduction to Improv class. I've also read live poetry at Creative Writing Club open mic nights and had two pieces published in The Manatee, Volume 16.
As a student, the most challenging part for me is not knowing when to take a break. As a creative major, it can be extremely taxing mentally to try to drum up new ideas for stories. I had to learn to close my laptop when I'm not feeling inspired, and to come back and try again at a later time. This is hard to do when deadlines are such a prominent thing, but I find that allowing yourself space to rest when needed can be exactly what you need to come up with your next best idea.
Academically, my grades and my motivation are things I'm incredibly proud of. I only turn in work that I'm exceptionally proud to have my name attached to, and always pour myself into everything I create. I'm also proud of my ability to remain positive and kind (even when things get difficult), and be a friend to others when they need a shoulder to lean on even if I'm struggling myself.
I hope to maintain friendships with my professors after graduation, and keep them in the know about what I'm up to.
