I have always been the type of person who volunteers within my community. Volunteering as part of the SNHU community provides me with a way to give back and connect deeper with my newest community.
What I enjoy most about volunteering at SNHU is getting to know other members of the SNHU community. While volunteering as a student ambassador in College For America (CFA), I was able to help other students understand the online program and get to know many of the other ambassadors, coaches, and program staff. I also enjoy volunteering during GDS each year for the opportunity to get to know SNHU staff from other departments in a non-work setting.
As a student ambassador, the best result for me was seeing a fellow student gain confidence and ultimately succeed in the program. The GDS project (Blue Ocean Society Beach Cleanup) I lead has resulted in cleaner NH beaches from removing many bags of trash collected by large groups of volunteers we typically have participate each year. Since the pandemic has prevented us from being able to volunteer in these larger groups, my family and I have been cleaning up litter along the side of the road in our neighborhood and along my usual running routes – which has resulted in cleaner neighborhoods.
The most unexpected result of cleaning up in the neighborhood was the tremendous amount of people who expressed their thanks to us. This gratitude came from not only the neighbors I know, but also many others that I had waved at but never had a chance to actually meet.
I will continue to volunteer at SNHU because I feel it is important to be involved in the communities you are a member of. I strongly believe it is my responsibility to give back and help where I am able.
I highly encourage all my coworkers to step-up and volunteer during GDS each year. I also post on social media during events that I volunteer at to try and inspire others to join in and help make a difference.
