Alumni, Family and Friends
Meet Aarron – a wonderful volunteer who strongly values the connections he makes with other SNHU community members when giving back. He’s proudly led several Global Days of Service projects and is currently serving on the Alumni Association Board of Directors. He raises his hand to help whenever he can and highly encourages others to do the same. Check out our Q&A below to learn even more about Aarron and why he thinks it's important to participate in volunteer opportunities with SNHU.
Community. I get so much energy and gratification from connecting and volunteering with such a multitude of incredible people. It's great that we share the common factor of SNHU, but still also get to learn so much from one another. Whether it's staff/faculty, current students, or other alum it's always an amazing time stepping into service with them and hearing about their experiences. Service is all about the people and I love that.
I really enjoy that the volunteering here truly serves the community. Sometimes service can get lost in the story or have an ulterior motive, but that's never the case with SNHU. All of the SNHU volunteer opportunities that I'm involved in really serve a purpose. You know for sure that you're helping change lives and the community when raising your hand to help give back with SNHU.
When I lead Global Days of Service (GDS) projects, I usually try to make them ones where you can see a tangible change. For example, cleaning an emergency shelter at the end of winter. We get to see the results of our efforts first-hand. I also see positive changes in myself ... such as new skills being developed or that when the next ask comes around, it's easier to say 'yes'. Lastly, I get to hear the amazing impact that SNHU volunteers have on the community from many different people.
I would say that you never know what the result of a connection will be. I was able to reach out to folks that I met through service, who also ended up being great resources for projects at work or were able to help with other events. When you give back for the right reasons I think you'll be surprised and delighted with the unexpected that happens!
Yes, I'll absolutely continue to volunteer with SNHU! The infrastructure of opportunities make service so easy to participate in. You know you'll be making a positive impact on an individual or the community. Finally, you get to expand your network with amazing humans from all walks of life and you grow so much from these experiences.
One way I try to encourage others to get involved is by sharing my service experiences via social media. It's so easy for people to tap into these opportunities, once they're made aware of them, so being able to get the information in front of others in this format is another great way to invite them in. I also promote volunteerism by talking about it throughout my life experiences in the community. I believe we can all serve in one way or another - the even bigger goal is inspiring others to take up the mantle as well!
