Alumni, Family and Friends
Meet Dori – a first-time SNHU Global Days of Service (GDS) site leader. This alumna took the steps to lead her first GDS project and hopes you will join the movement too! She loves that through her efforts she was able to bring awareness to an important cause and make new connections along the way. Check out our Q&A below to learn even more about Dori and her enthusiasm for helping those in need.
I'm inspired to volunteer with SNHU when I see how successful other alumni and students are with their Global Days of Service projects and how they bring others together to help our local communities.
What I enjoyed the most about volunteering with SNHU was the support I received from the Alumni Engagement team to help me with my GDS service project. This past spring I led my very first Global Days of Service project. I was nervous about how to get it started, but everyone involved really was supportive and guided me on how to get everything going!
Even though my project (Hope Health Clinic Baby Supply Drive) had an unexpected low turnout, we were still able to bring more attention to the community and the services that are needed still. Because of my efforts, the clinic that hosted the supply drive received more awareness overall. After my peers saw what we did for our community and what kind of projects we take on, they all agreed that they would definitely help out in the future and donate to the clinic in the meantime.
As I mentioned, the supply drive that I led unfortunately had a low turnout and we didn’t collect as many donations as we were hoping to. However, while the volunteers waited for people to arrive we got to talking and ended up having a lot of fellowship and having such a great time connecting with each other. We chatted about the communities and what we needed to do more for them, and we talked about SNHU! I felt like I made some new contacts and friends that day and I felt like we did a good thing by coming together for SNHU and for the community. We ended up hugging as we departed and I felt SO PROUD to be an SNHU alumna and having others so close by that were willing to help those in need.
Yes! I'd love to continue to volunteer with SNHU. I plan to either lead another GDS project or maybe be a part of someone else's project in the future. I think it means a lot to the community to see people coming together to give back in any way that they can.
I'd encourage others to get involved by spreading the word on social media or in-person and emphasis how important it is to volunteer as well as let them know what a great supportive team they have at SNHU! Anyone that is nervous about starting a project or even joining a project, should know that their fellow students and alumni at SNHU have their backs!
I really appreciate the opportunity to tell my story about leading my first GDS project and how great it was to volunteer with SNHU! If you'd like to reach out to me about my volunteer efforts you’re welcome to email me at dorian.elswick@snhu.edu.
